Unmasking Greatness! Blackwood Lane Releases the 2013 Cabernet Franc

Blackwood Lane made history again on the evening of February 24th, 2018 with the release of their 2013 Cabernet Franc. Five years in the making, this release was definitely worth the wait! However, when one releases a wine like this, you need a theme!

Masquerading at Blackwood!
A masquerade party seemed apropos, since they gained popularity during the Italian Renaissance. And, let’s face it, when you taste Blackwood Lane’s wine you feel reborn! From out of a very old tradition comes a new release, a new era, a new vintage and renewed excitement! 

Concealed Faces; Inconspicuous Praise
Historically, masquerade masks were used to hide one’s identity, speak freely and voice one’s emotions and opinions without impunity. And while we don’t live in 15th Century Italy, guests definitely felt the spirit of the Renaissance as they clandestinely imbibed the 2013 Cabernet Franc. While people may have arrived at the winery incognito, they could not hide their emotions or opinions about this world-class wine! The consensus was as expected for those familiar with Carlos’ remarkable talent and skill for creating wine… outstanding!

Prodigious Happiness
Guests had the good fortune of receiving prodigious pours of the new 2013 Cabernet Franc, a vintage that Carlos describes as a “happy wine.” He further reveals that the Cab Franc is his favourite grape, as “it’s challenging and requires a very particular way to ferment – but we have the secret!” Even behind the relative anonymity of his fabulous mask, Carlos was careful not to reveal much more!

Bright and Cheerful
What he can tell you, however, is that the 2013 Cabernet Franc is a “bright and cheerful wine with elegant earthy aromas and flavours of sweet plums, black currants, raspberries, gooseberries, spicy peppers, violets, and nutmeg.  It finishes long with bright, slightly piquant fruit. A very versatile red that pairs well with cedar plank salmon, or earthy dishes with olives and feta.” This is one very versatile wine!

Bottled Versatility
Carlos explains that the Cab Franc is a great wine to bring to dinner parties as it will go with almost anything. While it pairs perfectly with steak, it’s also versatile enough to go with fish or pasta!

In Praise of Cab Franc
One guest remarked that the 2013 Cabernet Franc has a “lightness” and a “lovely spring-like” taste. As Carlos uses no chemicals or additives in his winemaking process, guests also remarked at the smoothness of the wine that leaves no aftertaste – something all too common in lesser wines. Clearly, this is no lesser wine! Indeed, Carlos created the Cab Franc in the image of Bordeaux’s great right-bank wines such as Saint Émilion and Pomerol!

Craving and Passions Revealed
British author, Chloe Thurlow, contends that “masks reveal. They don’t conceal. Masks reveal your cravings, your passion, your deepest most secret desires.” We must admit that Blackwood Lane’s recent Masquerade Wine Release Party certainly revealed people’s craving and passion for the 2013 Cabernet Franc. As they say, “In Vino Veritas” (“In Wine There is Truth”)!
