Vancouver Wine Festival, 2018 Hidden Delights at Blackwood Lane’s Hospitality Suite

Nectar of the Gods 
The Vancouver Wine Festival is one of the most anticipated events of the year for full-fledged and budding oenophiles alike! True to Hemingway’s words, it certainly does offer boundless enjoyment and appreciation! It’s a wonderful opportunity for like-minded individuals to experience a wide range of great wines and wax poetic about their favourite varietals. It’s a chance to compare, discuss, critique, celebrate and generally basque in the joyous nectar of the Gods.


Best Kept Secrets 
While it was certainly wonderful to experience the many wines available at the festival, the best-kept secret was held at Blackwood Lane Winery’s hospitality suite at the Pan Pacific Hotel. As if to welcome Blackwood to the city, the clouds parted, and the sun came out, treating guests to a romantic view of the sun setting over the water below. As the evening progressed, sunset gave way to moonlight and intimate conversations over full glasses of some of Blackwood Lane’s finest wines. 

The 2014 Chardonnay 
General Manager, Kimberly Collins, was pouring Blackwood’s fabulous Chardonnay. This is a beautiful wine with golden straw colour, perfect balanced with medium acidity and body. Aged in Burgundian French oak barrels for 24 months, it’s a sensory delight! The nose is buttery with floral aromas, as well as aromas of lightly toasted walnuts, pine nuts, golden delicious apples, citrus, and vanilla. A long finish with flavours of nectarine, lemon, and apple butter. This wine is delicious paired with Alfredo pasta, cooked shellfish, and creamy garlic risotto. It also went incredibly well with the mouth-watering array of canapés served in the Blackwood suite! 

The 2012 Vicuña Roja 
Product Administrator, Kelli Kling, was pouring the Vicuña Roja. It’s their signature house red Bordeaux-style blend and the guests were definitely falling in love with it! This vintage is a foodie’s delight having a bouquet of chocolate, licorice, blackberries, cassis, violets, and soft nutty, nutmeg aromas. It begins with flavours of ripe plums, blackberries, and cherries, develops into a complex blend of fruit, minerals, chocolate, and spice, leading to a slight pepperiness and finishes long as a blend of all of these succulent flavours. We think it went especially well with the pan-seared Fraser Valley duck breast, served on toasted rustic crostini!

Friends of Blackwood Lane Winery 
Adding flavour to the wine, was the evening’s host and Blackwood Lane owner, Carlos Lee. It’s a rare treat to enjoy fine wine, but rarer still when the winemaker is on hand in person to share his passion and love for his art. Carlos was in his element, chatting ebulliently with his guests! In attendance were some of Blackwood’s longtime friends from BishopsNomadLIFTand Top of Vancouver Revolving Restaurant!

A Magical Evening 
No doubt, fine handmade wine, custom canapés, cherished friends and a moonlit view all add up to a very magical evening! We can’t wait until next year’s event! Until then, we’ve stocked up on the Chardonnay and Vicuña Roja!
